The Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association (ASAFA) held its official launch event in Singapore on 7 November 2024, with the aim to accelerate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption across Asia. Attended by over 150 industry leaders and policy makers, the launch event signifies the beginning of ASAFA’s journey towards a more resilient and environmentally sustainable future in air travel across the continent.
ASAFA aims to harmonise policies, enhance market frameworks, and boost public awareness of SAF in key regions, including Southeast Asia, South Korea, Japan, India, and China.
ASAFA’s mission is to foster a collaborative ecosystem that tackles key challenges within the SAF value chain. By bringing together feedstock providers, technology licensors, fuel aggregators, biofuel producers, airlines, investors, and policy-makers, ASAFA aims to enhance the accessibility and economic feasibility of SAF across Asia. Through active working groups involving both industry and government stakeholders, ASAFA will identify market gaps, align interests, and develop initiatives to support SAF development.
In addition to its policy and market efforts, ASAFA plans to increase public awareness of SAF’s impacts through tailored outreach efforts. These efforts would help to build a well-informed base of supporters in the broader community.
During the launch, ASAFA also announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to enhance collaboration between its members and A*STAR‘s Research Institutes. This partnership will pave the way for the piloting and implementation of advanced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technologies, alongside opportunities for business networking, Operation & Technology Road-mapping, and promoting the A*STAR Collaborative Commerce Marketplace to support local enterprise growth and strengthen Singapore’s aviation innovation ecosystem.
“We are placing Asia at the heart of our efforts by driving policies that resolve market inefficiencies, attract investments, and establish SAF as a viable decarbonization option for the aviation industry, making Asia a leader in SAF for net-zero aviation,” said ASAFA CEO Fabrice Espinosa.
Pioneer members of ASAFA include Sustainable Aviation Futures, Korea – Europe & You, General Index, Korean Air, 1PointFive, DHL Group, Bureau Veritas, Marquis Energy Global and more.
