JADE Engineering (JADE), a premier provider of aircraft cabin solutions and a subsidiary of SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC), has proudly launched a new Flammability Test Lab in partnership with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) on 26 September 2024. This facility marks a significant advancement for aviation safety in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and is poised to propel future innovations in fire safety testing.
Located in SP’s Aero Hub facility, the lab provides flammability testing services following in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines. In the near future, JADE intends to utilise the lab for certification programs from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
As the aviation sector strives to comply with ever-tightening safety regulations, the Flammability Test Lab will offer the essential infrastructure and expertise to test and certify fire-resistant materials for aircraft interiors, paving the way for safer and more sustainable cabin designs.
In a recent media release, Dr. Desmond Ong, General Manager at JADE Engineering, expressed that the new lab represents JADE’s vision to establish Singapore as a hub for aviation safety and innovation, serving as a platform for ongoing development and collaboration.
“As the aviation sector adapts to new safety challenges, we are committed to evolving our capabilities and working closely with our partners to stay at the forefront of innovation. Together with SP, JADE aims to shape the future of fire safety testing of aircraft interiors and beyond. We anticipate greater collaboration amongst industry, government and academia to push the boundaries of what’s possible in aerospace safety and certification,” Dr Ong added.
Another key aspect of this collaboration is to develop the next generation of aerospace engineers and researchers. SP will provide students and researchers direct access to the lab’s cutting edge technology, in order to promote practical experience in real-world testing situations. This partnership aims to combine academic research with industry insights to advance flammability testing methods and material innovations.
“Through this partnership, our students can access cutting-edge technologies and real-world industry experience,” said Mr Liew Hui Sing, Specialist (Aerospace), SP. “We are dedicated to developing the next generation of aviation leaders who will drive innovation. The Flammability Test Lab provides an invaluable platform for both education and research, solidifying our partnership with JADE.”
Moving forward, JADE Engineering and SP are exploring ways to further expand the lab’s scope beyond aviation to address the increased fire safety demands in automotive, maritime, and construction sectors. With advanced equipment and expertise, the lab aims to become a multidisciplinary hub for fire safety testing in the APAC region.
