In May 2023, 13 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Asia (Embry-Riddle Asia) students attended the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition in Malaysia. Excited and eager, they explored the vast exhibition grounds divided into aerospace and maritime zones. The aerospace section displayed military jets, commercial planes, and aerobatic performances, while the maritime zone exhibited naval vessels and maritime equipment.

By attending seminars and workshops, the students delved into diverse topics like aerospace engineering and ocean conservation. Witnessing live demonstrations of aircraft and naval exercises left them thrilled and inspired. Interactions and conversations with pilots, engineers, and naval officers helped deepened their knowledge and interests.

Embry-Riddle Asia also were allocated a booth at LIMA 2023 and highlighted their Virtual Reality (VR) capabilities to visitors. Visitors used the VR headset to have an immersive view of wind tunnel conditions of different shapes and airfoils. This experience allowed the participants to better understand how airflow flows around objects and gives them a chance to view a wind tunnel from angles that are not normally accessible in an actual wind tunnel. They were also given a VR first-person view of aircraft marshalling and experienced what it would be like if an aircraft came into the airport gate to park.

During their free time, the students explored Langkawi’s beauty, savoured local cuisines and immersed themselves in the island’s scenery and culture. They also acquired an open-sea diving license during the trip and took the time to enjoy the amazing nature and sea life that Langkawi has to offer.

The LIMA Exhibition left a lasting and memorable impact on the students. This experience gave them a chance to network and explore the aerospace industry during the exhibition. Broadened their horizons, sparked new career possibilities, and instilled a greater appreciation for international collaborations in these industries. With renewed passion and knowledge, they returned home, cherishing the unforgettable experience and carrying it into their academic and professional journeys in the near future.
