CAAS collaborates with SUTD to Offer Aviation Internship Opportunities to Students

  • 08 Aug 2023

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has joined hands with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to offer aviation-related internships to SUTD students. As part of a new three-year tie-up, this collaboration includes knowledge exchange in the areas of emerging unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) technology, air traffic management and aviation operations-related cybersecurity. SUTD’s Aerial Arena, a netted outdoor facility for drones, will hence be used for public educational outreach programs on the safe and innovative applications of unmanned aircraft systems.

The new partnership builds on an existing five-year tie-up between the two parties, which will end in March 2024. From that joint effort, it has already developed projects such as the Air Traffic Management project, which aims to create fast simulation models to aid air traffic decisions within the terminal airspace, runways, and gates. This tool, when launched in future, is designed to be able to quickly evaluate the capacity of an airport such as Changi under different weather conditions and runway closures, which will help traffic managers balance out demand and supply more effectively at any one time.

Through the new agreement, CAAS and SUTD hope to further extend existing efforts by tapping into SUTD’s well-known technology-driven, design-thinking solutioning.

Director-General of CAAS, Mr Han Kok Juan, said, “Through this partnership, CAAS hopes to better connect education and employment, to build a talent pipeline that starts with institutes of higher learning and develop from a younger age the deep capabilities we need in emerging areas like air traffic management, cybersecurity and unmanned aircraft system technologies,”

SUTD President, Professor Chong Tow Chong added, “This extension of our partnership with CAAS reinforces SUTD’s aviation focus in education and research to better support the capability and capacity development of SUTD undergraduates, graduates, and alumni.”

Professor Peter Jackson, Director of the Aviation Studies Institute (ASI), mentioned, “CAAS has been an excellent research partner, posing research challenges, connecting us with subject matter experts in air traffic management, providing feedback on research outcomes, and supporting our efforts at outreach to students and aviation stakeholders.”

SUTD year 2 student, Hon Xue Yi, from the Engineering Systems and Design (ESD) pillar, expressed his enthusiasm for the SUTD-CAAS tie-up, saying, “The partnership between SUTD and CAAS can benefit me and my course mates by providing us with exposure to real-world challenges in the aviation industry to enhance our learning experience. The internship opportunities will also allow interested students to gain practical experience and understand the aviation industry better, providing a clearer future career path in the aviation industry.”
