Changi Airport Reports 67.7M Passenger Traffic in 2024, Hitting 99.1% of Pre-pandemic Levels

Singapore Changi Airport has recently announced its passenger traffic in 2024. During the year, Changi Airport handled 67.7 million passenger movements, a 14.8% increase from 2023. This figure represents 99.1% of the passenger traffic seen in 2019, before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, aircraft movements reached a total of 366,000 in 2024, marking an 11.5% increase from 2023.

In the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024, Changi Airport recorded 17.8 million passenger movements, a 10.7% increase from Q4 2023, reflecting a full recovery in traffic numbers in Q4 2019.
The busiest month in 2024 was December, which saw 6.4 million passenger movements. It was also the first time when the monthly traffic surpassed six million since December 2019. The busiest day of 2024 was 21 December 2024 – the Saturday prior to Christmas – when 226,000 passengers passed through the Changi terminals.

While all regions witnessed growth, North Asia was the fastest growing region in 2024, registering an increase of 40% compared to 2023. The top five passenger markets for Changi Airport were China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand. China emerged as Changi Airport’s largest source market, with passenger traffic nearly doubling from 2023 and surpassing pre-Covid levels by 6%.
The busiest routes included Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali), and Hong Kong, with Shanghai making its first appearance in Changi’s top 10 cities list since 2011.
On the cargo front, Changi Airport recorded an airfreight throughput of 1.99 million tonnes in 2024, surpassing the 2023 figure by 14.6%. During Q4 2024, airfreight throughput reached 521,000 tonnes, marking a growth of 15.0%.

Growth was seen across all cargo flows– exports, imports and transshipments– contributed by major improvements in cargo flows between Singapore and China, along with the United States.Other growth factors in this area include the recovery of Singapore’s electronics exports and re-exports, high global demand for cross-border e-commerce, and a shift from ocean to air freight due to maritime transport disruptions.
Changi Airport’s top five cargo markets included China, Australia, the United States, Hong Kong, and India.
In the media release, Mr Yam Kum Weng, Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group, noted the strong growth in passenger and cargo traffic as well as connectivity in 2024. He also expressed gratitude for the close partnership with their airline partners, whose collaboration has been instrumental in driving the growth at Changi.
“Looking ahead, we are optimistic of another year of growth in passenger traffic. Operating a major air hub in Asia-Pacific, Changi Airport Group will continue to invest in our airport’s infrastructure, systems and processes to augment our handling capacity, so as to be well-placed to support the rising demand for air travel in the coming years,” said Mr Yam.

Enhancing its global connectivity, Changi Airport welcomed eight new passenger airlines in 2024, and added 11 new passenger city links to destinations like Broome, Brussels,and Vancouver. New routes also include flights to London Gatwick and Subang Airport, to provide passengers with more travel options. Additionally, two new freighter airlines were also welcomed in 2024, and two new freighter city links were added to Haikou and Nagoya.
As at January 2025, 100 airlines operate over 7,400 weekly scheduled flights at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to 163 cities in 49 countries and territories worldwide.
