Rescue Journey for Three Manatees across the United States

In October 2023, DHL flew three manatees weighing 750 to 1,000 pounds from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Orlando, Florida, in custom-built containers on a specially scheduled cargo plane. The three manatees – “Soleil”, “Calliope” and “Piccolina” were rescued as tiny, orphaned calves in Florida by State wildlife officials and were raised in Cincinnati Zoo, where the animals have grown big enough to be returned to the wild. To ensure a smooth and safe delivery, DHL transported the animals in custom-built containers that included 8-inch-thick foam beds and blankets to keep the manatees warm and were constantly misted with water to ensure that their bodies stayed moist. From Orlando, the three manatees were transported by truck to the city of Tampa and will undergo their final stage of rehabilitation at ZooTampa, before being released back into Florida’s waters in early 2024.

Delivery of Five Pre-owned Locomotives from the United States to Peru

In September 2023, DHL transported five pre-owned locomotives from Houston to Callao in Peru, by ship. Each locomotive, purchased by a Peruvian railway organization, was over 20 metres long and weighed 186 tons. For this delivery, a team of experts spent about two months planning every step, calculating processes, creating blueprints, weighing up possible routes, and checking materials. The ship sailed through the Gulf of Mexico and the Panama Canal for twelve days before arriving at the Peruvian coast.

Fast Delivery of a Life-saving Key from Tunisia to Germany

In April 2023, DHL flew an apartment key from Tunis Airport to the DHL Hub in Leipzig, Germany, within a few hours, to save a feathered friend in need. A man from Germany accidentally brought his apartment key with him on his trip to Tunisia, forgetting that there is a small bird in his apartment in urgent need of food and water. As such, he had to immediately get the key back to his home country. Upon arrival at the DHL Hub, a skilled service team was able to locate it amidst the many other shipments from Tunisia. This allowed the traveler’s partner to pick up the key from Leipzig Hub, saving the little bird’s life in time while keeping an intact door.

Delivery of 21 Bobsleds from Germany to China

DHL transported 21 bobsleds from Cologne, Germany, to Yanqing, China, for the start of the IBSF Bobsleigh World Cup in October 2023. The sleds, each about four metres long, belonged to athletes from several European nations. DHL picked up the equipment from the national bobsleigh federations and transported them to Cologne before flying them 5,000 miles to Beijing and then to Yanqing by truck. The delivery proved to be a time-critical operation, leaving no leeway for delays, especially since many athletes train until the last minute. Additionally, professional bobsleds are finely tuned precision machines, calibrated to their respective pilots. Hence, DHL had to ensure careful handling during transit to ensure their safe arrival.

Shipment of Three Wind Turbine Blades from the United States to Turkey

DHL delivered three blades for wind turbines, each weighing 14 tons and measuring 50 metres long, from Houston, US to Izmir, Turkey. The new blades are to replace damaged ones on a Turkey-based wind energy farm. DHL used a special vessel fitted with heavy-lift cranes for the one-month journey of the new blades. Upon arrival in Izmir, extendable trailers were used to transport the new blades to their destination.
