Embraer’s E-Freighter Receives FAA Certification

  • 16 Oct 2024

The E-Freighter, Embraer’s E190F, has officially received full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as of 10 October 2024. This certification follows the FAA’s earlier approval of Embraer’s passenger-to-freighter conversion and the Cargo Loading System developed by U.S. Cargo Systems in September 2024. The E-Freighter was also certified by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC) in July, with the EASA certification expected later this year.

Launched in May 2022, the E190F program was designed to address the evolving needs of e-commerce and modern trade, which would require fast deliveries and decentralised operations for speedier shipment deliveries to regional markets.

The conversion of E-Jets into freighters will offer over 40% extra volume capacity, three times the range of larger cargo turboprops, and will reduce operating costs by up to 30% compared to larger narrowbody aircraft. When considering both the capacity beneath the floor and on the main deck, the E190F can support a maximum structural payload of 13,500kg. The E-Freighter had its inaugural flight in April and made its first public appearance at the Farnborough Airshow in July this year.

In the media release, Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation expressed his excitement to enter the air cargo market. The “FAA certification is an important milestone in our passenger-to-freighter conversion program. With our E-Jet footprint across the US and worldwide, we are offering optimum cargo solutions to our customers for this connected world”, said Mr Holmes.
