Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Asia recently organised the Aviation and Aerospace Safety Summit, held on February 14, 2025, under the theme “Empowering Safety Leaders, Cultivating Safety Culture.” The event brought together industry experts, safety professionals, and regulators to discuss critical aviation safety challenges and opportunities.
The summit featured a keynote speech by the Honorable Robert Sumwalt, former Chairman of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). With extensive experience in aircraft accident investigation and safety advocacy, Sumwalt provided valuable insights into the evolution of transportation safety in the U.S. His address emphasised the need for a proactive approach to safety leadership and the importance of fostering a strong safety culture in aviation.

Following the keynote, a distinguished panel discussion was held featuring prominent industry leaders. Mr. Alan Foo, Deputy Director-General and Chief Risk Officer at the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), shared his expertise on regulatory frameworks and risk management in aviation safety. Mr. Mitchell Fox, Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for Aviation Safety at the Flight Safety Foundation, provided insight into emerging trends and best practices in flight safety. Additional aviation safety professionals such as Mr. Michael Toft, Director of the Transportation Safety Investigation Bureau also contributed their perspectives, enriching the discussion with their diverse experiences and expertise.
The panel explored pressing safety issues, emerging risks in aviation operations, and strategies to strengthen safety protocols. The discussions covered topics such as data-driven safety management, human factors in aviation incidents, and regulatory advancements aimed at improving global aviation safety standards.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to engage with industry leaders and gain firsthand knowledge on the best practices of aviation safety. The summit also provided students with a deeper understanding of the skills and competencies required to excel in safety-related roles within the aviation sector. The interactive Q&A session allowed participants to pose questions to experts, further enhancing their learning experience.
The summit was a testament to ERAU Asia’s commitment to advancing aviation safety education and fostering industry collaboration. With the recent opening of the new campus at Seletar Aerospace Park, the university continues to solidify its role as a premier institution for aviation learning and innovation. The presence of university senior leadership, including President P. Barry Butler, Ph.D., further underscored the significance of this milestone event.
