From 29 May to 6 June 2024, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Asia (Embry-Riddle Asia) students recently participated in an Overseas Enrichment Programme (OEP) that took them to the heart of aviation innovation — Toulouse, France. This student-led initiative, organized by the Student Government Association of Embry-Riddle Asia, provided a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of aerospace, gaining firsthand experience and insights into one of the industry’s leading giants, Airbus.

The highlight of the trip was the visit to Airbus Headquarters. Participants were given an exclusive tour around its state-of-the-art facilities, witnessing the intricate processes involved in aircraft manufacturing. The students also learnt about where each aircraft part was manufactured as Airbus’ operations were spread out across Europe, for instance, the fuselage of the A350’s are manufactured in Hamburg, Germany. This tour not only expanded the participants’ technical knowledge but also inspired them by showcasing the pinnacle of aerospace engineering.

Adjacent to the Airbus HQ lies the Aeroscopia Museum, another key stop on the itinerary. The museum, a treasure trove of aviation history, offered the students a comprehensive view of the evolution of aircraft design and technology. They marveled at historic aircraft, from the legendary Concorde to vintage military planes, and at the same time gained a deeper appreciation for the advancements in aviation over the decades. The museum’s interactive exhibits and detailed displays provided a tangible connection to the theoretical knowledge acquired in their studies.

The journey continued with a visit to the École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), France’s premier aeronautics university. At ENAC, the students were introduced to the complexities of air traffic management and the critical role of air traffic controllers in ensuring aviation safety. They also had the unique opportunity to experience a full 180-degree air traffic control simulator, which offered a realistic and immersive glimpse into the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges faced by air traffic controllers. This hands-on experience was invaluable, allowing students to understand the coordination and precision required in air traffic management.
