On August 25th 2023, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Asia (Embry-Riddle Asia) organized a talk in collaboration with the Air Line Pilots Association of Singapore (ALPA-S), on “Human Factors in Aviation”. Essentially, ALPA-S is a trade union that represents pilots based in Singapore, their primary aim is to focus on pilots solicitude and improve working conditions. ALPA-S is a member of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Association, otherwise known as IFALPA.

Embry-Riddle Asia students had the unique opportunity to engage with four experienced pilots from ALPA-S in a candid discussion on the critical role of human factors in aviation. The event, part of a Human Library series, delved into key aspects of pilot operations, shedding light on how factors like Fatigue, Stress, Complacency, and Communication impact aviation safety. This event helped connect pilots and aviation students together to pave the way for real-world perspectives and experiences in the aviation world. This gives a chance for the students to interact with the pilots, gaining career guidance and networking opportunities.

The event started off with students giving presentations on their understanding of these human characteristics, setting the stage for the discussions that followed. The pilots offered their wealth of experience over the two-hour session, providing insights on how these issues are handled and minimised. The session offered a stage for students to gain firsthand knowledge of how these factors profoundly influence pilot operations and, more crucially, how they are managed in real-world aviation scenarios.

These insightful discussions between pilots and students not only enhanced the participants’ understanding of human factors in aviation but also fostered a deeper appreciation on the complexities and responsibilities of a pilot. The ALPA-S Human Library session highlights the importance of continuous learning and open dialogues in the pursuit of aviation safety.
